The magnificent Grand Canal

We all know I’m a sucker for “off-the-beaten-path” travel, that I’m an enthusiastic visitor of former Soviet nations and lover of borscht and goulash. So the fact that I’m about to wax poetic about Venice, perhaps the most touristed city in one of the most touristed countries in the world may come as a shock. Brace yourselves! The fact is, Venice is an amazing and unique place, and one I think is frequently misunderstood. Because of that, planning a trip there has a lot in common with the way I plan trips to places with very LITTLE tourist infrastructure – it requires research and investigating. Yes, you will need to accept the fact that you’re going to stand in a few lines (like, you cannot leave Venice without seeing the inside of St. Mark’s Basilica) but you should also rest assured that you can visit this enchanting city of water and eat delicious, reasonably priced food and find yourself in places where you may be the only tourist. You can avoid any and all gondola rides and drink the most delicious aperol spritzes the world over. Sold yet? Head over to the latest travel page for more info.
