Majestic Parliament building

Lately, and one could argue for a long time now, Hungary has not been doing itself many favors with its politics, which are controversial at best and downright racist at worst. But while some may disagree, I don’t think this should preclude it from your travel to-do list. Traveling is a chance to expand your world, to meet people, to incite change, to confront history; getting to know a place and its culture can only make the world bigger, not smaller. So I hope you do make it to Hungary, to see its gorgeous capital, eat paprika-filled meals, marvel at its stunning cathedrals. I hope you decide to rent a bicycle and get out in the open air and drink more dessert wine than you thought you’d ever want to. But most of all, I hope you go to see the real Hungary, beyond Budapest, beyond the Hapsburgs, beyond the bluster. The real Hungary is humble, kind and unique.
