Chinese Crisp Beef and Beijing Baked Breads

On Saturday night I visited the Queens Night Market for the first time ever, and I was completely blown away. I heard about it for the first time last year and had been interested in going, but I wasn’t prepared for the staggering array of vendors and the general energy of the place. On Saturday nights, the parking lot of the Queens Science Museum gets filled with food stalls, each selling a handful of different options all for about $6, and people storm the place. Lines snake every which way, a live band plays, kids run underfoot and everyone is chowing down.

Homity Pie

If you’ve never had homity pie, you’re in for a real treat. Falling somewhere between a quiche and a shepherd’s pie, it’s incredibly British and insanely delicious. If you know of anything tastier and more comforting than the best mashed potatoes ever stuffed into a flaky pie crust, please let me know about it ASAP. In the meantime, you should probably make this.

Parker House Rolls

Rolls fresh from the oven

I hope everyone had an enjoyable, or at least somewhat relaxing, Thanksgiving last week. This year our table featured a lot of old standbys (roasted brussels sprouts, stuffing, mashed potatoes) and a few newer items that really stole the show, like a from-scratch green bean casserole, a sweet potato pie and these Parker House rolls.

Asturian Chorizo Pie (Empanada Asturiana)

And last but not least, the mother empanada to end all empanadas. I came across this recipe in my go-to anthology on Spanish cooking. Feeling a little indulgent, and still fondly remembering the taste of the delicious little empanadas I had made not long before, I thought to myself: Why NOT make a pie filled with chorizo?
