Spicy Cabbage and Rice (Lahanorizo Kaftero Kozanis)

First of all, happy new year to everyone!  It’s January 2nd, which means most of us have just barely recovered from the stresses of the holidays and this week’s celebrations. Regardless of what you’re bouncing back from, I doubt I’m alone in my readiness to eschew all things “holiday.” That means no more cloves, cinnamon, allspice, winter squashes and cranberries, at least for the time being. Adios rolling pie dough, goodbye feeding 8-10 relatives, sayonara washing dishes. For me, this week is about getting back to simplicity, back to cooking in a single pot.

Potato, Feta and Basil Tortilla

Labor Day has passed and, in a bizarre twist, summer has finally arrived in New York City in all of its humid, smelly glory. So while my neighborhood Starbucks is advertising the arrival of the pumpkin spice latte on its door, I have been camped out in front of the air conditioner literally mopping my brow with the back of my hand. It doesn’t make any sense, but I’m going with the flow and using this heat wave as an opportunity to throw some last summery recipes your way before all we can talk about are root vegetables and braises.

Baked Rice with Zucchini (Arroz con Calabacin)

Every so often, it’s refreshing to make a dinner that doesn’t require grinding a custom spice mix with a mortar and pestle or using Google translate in the grocery store. It’s a busy time of year at work, and, as much as I love to cook, the warmer weather is a tempting alternative to spending hours in my dark and claustrophobic cave of a kitchen. And so, in an unusual move for me, I’ve been looking for inspiration in simplicity.

Gratinnéed Spinach and Ricotta Gnocchi

The 50° weather over the weekend reminded my skin what it felt like to be pleasantly exposed to air and gave me renewed hope that spring will, someday, come again. Twenty-four hours later as I trundled to work with neither gloves nor scarf, I was confronted with more blistery weather and a 10-day forecast that has thrown me into polar despair once again. So as we embark into our third (I think it’s third?  I’ve lost count) vortex, I offer you comfort. Comfort in the form of gnocchi.
